Frequently Asked Questions

HOW MANY TIMES WILL MY KIT PRODUCE MUSHROOMS?

Depending on species you may get 2-4 flushes. But we guarantee at least one flush of mushrooms.

There are many factors which determine the amount of flushes. Mushrooms are a living organism and it is quite a skill to cultivate them. Humidity, fresh air and temperature are the pillars of mushroom cultivation.

WHAT IS A "FLUSH"?

Besides a hand of playing cards of the same suit. A "flush" in mushroom cultivation is each crop or harvest of mushrooms. Depending on species, they usually appear once every 7-14 days.

HOW MANY MUSHROOMS WILL IT GROW?

Most mushroom kits are token size, ours weigh between 2.2 and 2.6kg. They are what the mushroom industry calls "fruiting blocks".

That said, depending on species, first flushes usually yield 400g-1kg.

Each subsequent flush is usually smaller.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR KIT ONCE ITS EXPENDED?

Remove your block from the plastic packaging and

Bury your block in the garden and cover with mulch or soil - this will encourage them to flush again!

OR

Break it up and use as mulch

WHY DID MY MUSHROOMS STOP GROWING?

When there isn't enough humidity around the block, mushroom pins usually stop growing. Don't be alarmed! Your mushroom kit is still alive and can fruit. Simply remove the dried-up pins (mushrooms) and leave the block to rest for a week. After that, soak the block in cold water for 20 minutes, remove all the water from the bag, and begin again.

They are also rich in antioxidants and may have health benefits for the heart, blood sugar regulation, and your immune system. Not to mention, mushroom fibers are well known to have prebiotic properties.

Grow It Yourself!

You want to harvest right before the margin of the mushroom cap begins unfurling toward the sky and the mushroom becomes trumpet-shaped. If you wait a little too long, there’s no harm done! The mushrooms are still delicious. Over the next two months, you can expect another 2-3 flushes if the conditions allow!

Explore Mushroom Traits, Growing Tips, and Culinary Uses

With our specially prepared mushroom grow kits you can now grow these mushrooms at home. It's easy and with guaranteed results, even for those with no experience! It only takes a little space, a bit of care, and you will reap the rewards. Watching them grow is half the fun!

Prefer Cooler Temperatures

When cultivating Black King Oyster mushrooms, temperature control is key. Ideally, these mushrooms prefer temperatures ranging from 10° to 21°C degrees. A couple of degrees difference may be acceptable, but for optimal growth and pinning, Black King Oyster mushrooms really thrive at 21 degrees or below. Keep these conditions in mind when using our Black King Oyster mushroom grow kit to ensure a successful and abundant harvest.

Step-by-step Instructions

After some time you will begin to see small dense clumps of mycelium developing at the cut. This is where it gets fun! These little clumps will slowly inflate over 7-14 days into full-sized Black King Oyster Mushrooms

How Do I Grow It?

  • Step 1
  • Step 2
  • Step 3

Place your block on its side and where the block presses against the plastic, take a sharp clean knife and make a 10-12cm cut along this part of the bag (you could cut an “x” shape or a simple line).

Place your sliced bag in a humid part of your home (near the kitchen sink or bathroom). Make sure it is kept away from direct sunlight, and keep it well hydrated. Do this by spraying the outside of your block, over the sliced area, with water at least once per day but preferably 2-3 times.

The mushrooms can take 2-6 weeks to fruit, but will usually appear within 5-7 days. Once they appear, keep watch, they grow very fast and will be ready to harvest in 7-21 days. Harvest them all at once by gently grasping the mushrooms at the base, twist and pull.

mushrooms galore!

I bought a pink oyster mushroom and a blue one. Pinky is still putting out mushrooms and bluey is just about to do a second flush. Bluey's first flush looked like the Giant's Causeway initially. I love watching them grow.
Really good value for money. When Pinky is finally spent I'll use the substrate as bedding in my worm farm. Bluey is weeks off that happening.

Thank you so much for leaving a review for our Blue Pearl Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit! We're thrilled to hear that you're enjoying watching your mushrooms grow and that you're getting multiple flushes from both the pink and blue varieties. It sounds like you're really getting your money's worth! And great idea to use the spent substrate as bedding in your worm farm - that's a fantastic way to repurpose it.
